The location dictates the design.

During my stay in Portugal, I visited Santa Clara 1728, part of Silent Living.

A place designed by Aires Mateus, an architectural firm whose understated architecture and attention to light have inspired me for years.

The simplicity of the design, the connection with the surroundings and the careful use of materials align seamlessly with the vision of Ante Quercus.

No excess, but tranquillity, balance and a timeless beauty that is palpable in every space.

In addition to this visit, I spent time at a special location in the middle of an olive grove. A place where the initial ideas for a future project take shape. As always, the design does not begin with a drawing, but with a focus on the site itself.

For me, the surroundings form the starting point. The landscape, the light, the architecture and the materials determine the direction of the design. Through observation, experience and intuition, a design emerges that feels natural.

The lighting in Santa Clara also caught my attention. Davide Groppi’s understated luminaires demonstrate how light can enhance a space without taking centre stage. A vision of lighting that aligns closely with Ante Quercus’s projects.

The place determines the design.

From the inside out.

Architecture, nature and texture in balance.
